Do you remember when the trees were bare and we were all wearing parkas at the market? It’s kind of hard to conjure those memories right now. These days, everyone is in their beach gear and the birds and insects are humming away in the thick green forest of Coffee Creek.
This year we added two whole markets in April before many area farmers market begin. We also added one in November, bringing our season to a whopping 29 weeks! Why?
As you know, our farmers and food makers need to survive all year round. Also, we are trying to contribute to a strong local food system. We may not be able to grow certain vegetables in February, but we all (including farmers) still have to eat in the winter!
As we think about the abundant season we are in now, we stop and recognize that seasons change and we need to prepare for the future. We can all think about how we can preserve local food in order to eat well throughout the winter. Canning, freezing, and fermenting are all great ways to make the harvest last longer.
So we stop and celebrate all that the season has to offer us this week, especially the folks that grown and make our local food.
This week, we also want to thank YOU for making the Coffee Creek Farmers Market a success year after year. We can be here as long as you shop with us.
